I would gather some of this group use VLC (or something similar to it that might be affected). Apparently, there's an unapparent cost:

What about personal/commercial usage?
Some of the codecs distributed with VLC are patented and require you to pay royalties to their licensors. These are mostly the MPEG style codecs.

With many products the producer pays the license body (in this case MPEG LA) so the user (commercial or personal) does not have to take care of this. VLC (and ffmpeg and libmpeg2 which it uses in most of these cases) cannot do this because they are Free and Open Source implementations of these codecs. The software is not sold and therefore the end-user becomes responsible for complying to the licensing and royalty requirements. You will need to contact the licensor on how to comply to these licenses.

This goes for playing a DVD with VLC for your personal joy ($2.50 one time payment to MPEG LA) as well as for using VLC for streaming a live event in MPEG-4 over the Internet.

It's the first time I've heard of this minor payment, which you wouldn't really know about unless you were digging around in the VLC Frequently Asked Questions. Granted, this kind of issue is a small scale compared to what could happen if an issue about say, libdvdcss, wound up in court (can we say triple damages?).

In the meantime, I'll write MPEG LA a check for $2.50 assuming they can actually explain to me what's going on (reading some of those license agreements is probably akin to major surgery without the anesthesia).

Swiss accidentally invade Liechtenstein

(AP) What began as a routine training exercise almost ended in an embarrassing diplomatic incident after a company of Swiss soldiers got lost at night and marched into neighboring Liechtenstein.

According to Swiss daily Blick, the 170 infantry soldiers wandered just over a mile across an unmarked border into the tiny principality early Thursday before realizing their mistake and turning back.

A spokesman for the Swiss army confirmed the story but said that there were unlikely to be any serious repercussions for the mistaken invasion.

"We've spoken to the authorities in Liechtenstein and it's not a problem," Daniel Reist told The Associated Press.

Officials in Liechtenstein also played down the incident.

Interior ministry spokesman Markus Amman said nobody in Liechtenstein had even noticed the soldiers, who were carrying assault rifles but no ammunition. "It's not like they stormed over here with attack helicopters or something," he said.

Liechtenstein, which has about 34,000 inhabitants and is slightly smaller than Washington DC, doesn't have an army.

So, there’s this game called 'Unfolding' right. You have to move the nodes so that no lines are crossing. Here’s an example:


Easy enough, ne?



Complete a level? Node count Increases.



Once you get the hang of it, the algorithm alone is really rather trivial.



By now you can probably see where this is going...


Lets say we omit a few levels for the sake of time and energy...
Ah, how about we pick up at Level 11


Things have become a bit more complicated, but as you can see in the solution there aren't that many nodes.

Ok. So this is where it gets a bit more interesting...

Sometime around this point these responses start popping up:


"If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?"

Hell no! I've worked hard on this level I'm not giving up...

By Level 16 the dialog box is not just popping up once near the end of each level. No no no. Now its multiple times before the completion of a single level...


By Level 19 this 'simple game' has been transformed into a completely different kind of battle...


If that darn dialog pops up, its going to be minutes before you can continue. Sometimes it pops up 2x maybe even 3x before you can even make a single move!

By now its become personal! No longer is it about the efficiency at which you perform the simple algorithm. Noooo. You choose unwisely, and the program will have to recheck all the nodes until it discovers crossing lines!
(Even if they haven't been touched!)


By Level 21 you have become intimate with the coder... and will start to abhor him! @_@




Level 22...

Over the last few levels you have gathered a complete understanding of how this Monstrosity has been coded. You know exactly what to do in order to evade the Relentless Dialog Box until the last few sets of moves.



And for whatever reason...

You have something else to do

You realize your computer & the code have both reached their limits

You feel your last bit of sanity is about to ooze out and join the rest of the pool on the floor

Or you accidentally click the shuffle button because the node count is so great that you are working in tight spaces and can't see what you are doing...

We were reassured during the great scare back in 2003 when Page told us that the Y wasn't dieing as fast as once predicted.

BUT! Numbers are changing!

What once was 78 of 1,000 genes left on The Y is now a pitiful 45 working genes!
(And it used to be 1,400!)


Where have all the genes gone !?!

One in every 150,000 Men are currently being born without the Y chromosome.

These XX Men might become infertile!


What do Women have to say about this?

Nothing! They don't need us apparently!

When reproducing, a mother and father swap genes to create an embryo.
It was previously believed that The Y sits out the gene swapping during fertilization. Static DNA can lead to harmful mutations!
Recently, scientists have discovered that The Y continuously reshuffles its DNA using its own borders.

Ha, we aren't useless trouble makers!

Only... incestuous swapping could cause deletions leading to infertility, among other problems. -_-;

NEW from Clemson! DARPA proudly presents:

ROBOTIC TENTICLES!

"Each Octarm is powered by compressed air and has surface pressure sensors, positional sensors and a camera mounted at its tip. This allows the limb to nimbly investigate pipes, tunnels and other narrow spaces."

"This ability, inherent in the OCTOR robots, gives OCTOR arms a huge advantage over conventional industrial robots."

They were developed through a project called OCTOR (sOft robotiC manipulaTORs), which involves several US universities and is funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
(What can I say, I like to know where my tax dollars are going. ^_^ )


What Can They Doo?

"Just like a real tentacle!" So I guess it does what all tentacles do when they go home from a hard days work?

It is not clear what military purposes the Octarms will be used for, but the limbs have also been attached to Talon robots, which are typically employed for reconnaissance and bomb disposal tasks.
