News - Anime - AFRO NOOO !!!!

When the new season's shows were being announced I ran into AFRO-SAMURAI on MOONPHASE

I thought LOL that might be interesting and bookmarked it. Now I fully comprehend what moonphase was saying about the show.

GONZO is directing Afro Samurai in English using American cast members such as Samuael L. Jackson. Each of the 5 episodes will have a budget of $1 Million or more. The anime will be produced for America and then dubed in Japanese, however the episode times will be 25 min long and then cut for English TV broadcast times (missing 3 min).

ANN recently announced that a trailer is avaliable. (Is that pedro's son I see?)

AFRO NOOOOO!!!

(Ha! Now the site has an age verification)

Junk - What Font Expresses You?

(I couldn’t bring myself to using the first sentence as the entry title. Too many people would be mislead and disappointed. (We don’t need to bring any more attention to ourselves anyway. >_< ) I don’t want to waste their time. Yours on the other hand … heh heh. _(-_-);_ Enjoy? )

First impressions are important, are you making the right one? You only get one chance. Are you expressing your personality properly, or are people seeing you as 'something else'?

Your writing can instantly identify the quality of your personality. Are people even reading what you write? Or are they just flipping right by?

What font is correct for you?

Perception of Fonts: Perceived Personality Traits and Uses

lol, don't worry that article isn’t exactly 'entertaining' but I wanted to make note of it. Kinda’ dressed it up a bit to make a point. ^_^; Similar to Color Theory and other technical documents on how visuals are perceived, the article covers the results of a study to poll the impressions that different fonts can create..

Not enough Research funding? Proposals not doing it for you? Well, that’s where its going. >_< (Though, I do believe it’s a good concept.)

hollywood sucks

so,

last year, hollywood released "stealth," a movie about a jet with an ai that caused it to turn evil (very eerily similar to macross plus.)

well, earlier tonight,

saw a commercial for "pulse"

a movie that starts with a guy who dies

and then a couple of days later,

his friends get emails from him

anyone else find this pattern disgusting?

and why isn't monster out yet?

moskau!

ho ho ho ho! hey!

apparently this was a huge internet fad, and i completely missed out on it. i can see why. it just consumed the last ninety minutes of my life.

and now that you're hooked just like me (or if you already were)...

if those octogenarians could do it, so can you!

these guys did it...

even ni-chaneru (2chan) did it! (sorry, couldn't embed it)

semi-important news

1. if you want to pillage your own radio shack, go to their store locator. there's a special icon next to each store that's closing

pillage while the pillaging's good!

2. this is old news, but if you own Doki Doki School Hours Vol 3, episode 9 is out of sync and geneon's offering a dvd exchange program. i would highly recommend jumping on this opportunity. bandai has done nothing for me and my 3 scratched special editions of planetes.

Electron Band Structure In Germanium, My Ass

Abstract: The exponential dependence of resistivity on temperature in germanium is found to be a great big lie. My careful theoretical modeling and painstaking experimentation reveal 1) that my equipment is crap, as are all the available texts on the subject and 2) that this whole exercise was a complete waste of my time.

I just wandered in to see if the latest episode was out.. few minutes later.. surprise!
(First to download! - Which means absolutely nothing. YAY)

Now I can burn of the ~55.45 GB more (another 12 DVD T_T), and start moving the rest to the file server.

That reminds me, the box still needs a decent name. Lots of possible candidates, (trust me on that one, the list is -huge-) some of which include Miyamoto, kenshiro, kintaro, Shirase, Hororo Chiriri Kururu Sarara, cast of sensei no ojikan, combatsan, otari kawamura tomine. and more.
But, I like to pick names to fit the 'personalities'/roles the boxes play.
If I ever get around to picking one I'll let you know.

Now if only gg would end up subbing 'Pani Poni Dash' 26 even though ADV already sent them a letter. ^_^; (Personally, I wouldn't have posted what they did regarding ep 26. People are smart, they'll figure it out on their own.)

Anime - NHK ni Youkoso - Episode 01 Response

KITA!!

I wasn't going to post anything on this yet, but Omni put up a typical first episode entry that I wanted to share. I took plenty of screenshots, and now the 1280x720 RAW is out (probably be torrented in america today/tomorrow), but that means sorting through them and 'making decisions'. That, and there are different types of 'introductions', and I'd rather first make an 'announcement' to gather interested individuals, then go into the episode details in a separate post. This is a brief summary of my opinions.

Manga vs Anime

Character Design - There was the worry that the anime characters might not look close enough to the originals from the manga. After seeing the first episode, Sato-kun and Misaki-chan seem reasonable to me. Kashiwa-senpai is fine too. Young Committee Rep (from the short clip we have) looks good. 'oro?' you say, read on. Of course Misaki's Aunt, well she has a face you can't forget. Clips of Yamazaki in the next episode preview as well, he seems a bit different though. (Closer to the sites character design in terms of looks.)

Plot Progression - Episode one 'Welcome to the Project!' (anime) Covers the grounds of the first chapter of the manga (minus introduction of Yamazaki). The beginning of Misaki introducing 'The Project' while outside, is also included.
If you were wondering about Kashiwa-senpai and Committee Rep., a few flashbacks were included. Kashiwa-senpai gets a bit of the limelight, and Committee Rep. gets a 10 second or so clip. (These decisions seem appropriate considering 24 minute time frames.) (Committee Rep can be seen at bottom of this post)

Changes? - The anime thus far (one ep) seems as if its not 'as dark', but it is still somewhat dark (ok, maybe not, but some might find it to be so). As compared to the manga, not nearly as dark. So far the plot lines up, the character designs are very close, and the mood seems acceptable. Though currently, the drama is taking the place of the thinned darkness. (Maybe its to hook first time viewers?)
A few pieces of the plot have been moved around, but its not to an extent of changing the plot, though how one experiences it might vary. (ex. when he answers the door he doesn't 'daydream' while standing there, that happens later.)
As for the 'darkness' a simple/subtle example of tone is how he looks when he answers the door, then his response afterwards.) (After job hunt... chocking? -_-)

Somewhat SPOILER-esq (not if you read ch1 of the manga) you have been warned:
-----BEGIN SPOILER-esq Mentionings------

I wondered how they might get away with some of the rather 'questionable scenes'. At first they had Sato-kun imagine a nun which was 'sleeping and talking in her sleep' (I'm not noting the placement of her hand @_@; ). Ah ha, reasonable. Later they have him imagine her, but its a bit more 'revealing'.
-------END SPOILER-esq Mentionings-------

Manga Large VersionAnime Large Version
Example of Anime vs Manga

Some frames from the manga were 'recreated' in the anime. As with many manga-to-anime conversions, there are different approaches and some things come out 'just different'. (Ex. conquering/destroying the glass bottle as a first step. The expressed tone/mood in the manga just seemed better (to me at least). Remember that these are different mediums though.

A little more info on the manga can be found in this old entry.

Random Aside

On-topic, yet sidetracked - short observations based on How a viewer's interpretations are objective and How anime typically 'imposes more' on a viewer then manga does.

Of course, when reading a manga the reader can typically make of it what they want (to an extent). Anime can also be received in many ways, but with music, voices, moving pictures!, 'more time', and etc. anime can be a bit more imposing. If it seems 'funny', the anime could potentially not be 'as funny', though this is all objective, and the reasons for which one creates their opinions is based on their past experiences with the presented music/similar_music, phrases, voice actors, situations, and other presented material, even how they grew up to interpret the world. (A whole lot.) Meaning if something subtle is changed, it might mean a great deal to one group of people, and nothing to another. (Same/similar to one man's trash being another's treasure, one man's comedy might be another’s tragedy (sometimes a very sadistic tragedy), people interpret things differently.

(Not exactly applicable here, but I was reminded of this quote)
Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall down an open manhole.
-Mel Brooks

I mention that difference in the interpretation/experienced_effect, so that I can point out that thus far there have not been (what might be interpreted as) any 'major changes' that I have noticed between the anime and the manga. (But, the darkness factor so far is fairly significant.) Though there are some 'more subtle' differences which might bother people, the first episode seems to be 'logically' mostly similar. A.K.A the anime's plot and looks are pretty close to the manga. (Tone-wise its a bit different but not by 'a lot'.)
Note: This Response is all based on a single episode (the first no less), -it means almost nothing- (basically), but it leads to some interesting pondering huh? ^_^;

(Extracting the underlying themes and approaches GONZO 'has taken' with the first episode (note those are all interpretations anyway) assumptions can be made based on assumptions. I rest my case. But I'll do it anyway and then point out the irony of it all. >_< )

My Response to episode one?

Image from OP
Opening (OP) - Cute. Fairly stylistic, as might be expected by GONZO. The puzzle theme is nice. The song is also appropriate.
Ending (ED) - Fun, I enjoyed it quite a bit. 'Weird' :/ Also be Warned, a few semi-'newd13' shots (but tastefully done in my opinion), then the fun starts.

The Show -
At first I just kinda’ stared at it without making any evaluations (confused, not really sure that I saw anything that bothered/amazed me). There were things that I enjoyed, and not much that I thought I could complain about it. I defiantly enjoyed it, but with just the first episode thus far, I'm not 'crazy about it'(aka enamored) yet.
Yes, its 'different' from the manga, though not so much that it would frustrate me. I just take it as something of its own for now.

Just wait, they have children, babies, and pets too!
'Mike-like' style at times. \(^_^)/

(If that makes sense. Hey! Watch it, no, where's everyone going T_T >_<; But seriously, if you believe it might be amusing give it a chance. Its only a bit.)

Visitors?

Check out Omni's SCREENSHOTS of several scenes throughout the first episode.

Again, to emphasize:
With this being the first episode I can not make much of an evaluation/prediction on how the series will turn out.

So far though, I would say that I will continue to embrace the manga as the original, and the anime as an extra perk. Then if the anime becomes something of its own, I will give it recognition, but that recognition will be based on its ability to stand on its own.
(Not as a being 'better then the manga' but as something separate. Different scoring scales you might say, as in comparing the enjoyment of pure comedy to pure action films, they are enjoyed for different reasons. (not as apples to oranges, but as portraits to vacation photos~?)

Final Ramble
Bits on Omni's comment

The opening animation is unique, high production quality, very fitting for the Puzzle theme. Same goes for the ending animation, but it’s a bit more on the weird side (minus the n3k1d Misaki and Kashiwa-senpai).

(fixed n3k1d)

LOL, n3k1d Misaki and Kashiwa-senpai == not weird. ???
(Or is it that the n3kidne55 is not of HQ? I don't believe that is what was meant though)

Well, I guess its expected from the manga (therefore not weird)... I believe people expect certain things from the anime of this century, and I find their expectations - amusing. ^_^; (as in, the fact that their expectations are what they are, not as in the expectations themselves. Though, those can be fun too.. if done 'well' >_< )

-----
Omni figured out the encoding
Checkout the OP and ED Clips at omni's blog.
(If rapidshare maxes out after the OP try the second mirror (megaupload) for the ED.)

Ha! Why am I one of three people to vote the anime a 7 (the lowest rating so far) and there are 40 people that gave it a 10? I thought I liked it lol
(40 votes on 10 the other 10 votes on 7-9.5)
No, I know several reasons why, I'm just teasing, but I find it amusing. With more voters, the distrobution will probably change within the next week or so.

And finally heres a shot of the Committee Rep for anyone interested.

213 Things Skippy Can't Do - The List

Wow, this guy is a genius. He was in the army and he got very bored since apparently there wasn't any real military action he was involved in. So this list is things his officers told him or people he served with they could not do. Friggin' awesome! Some of this stuff is just amazing.

Randomness - Tentacle Robots! The Real Applications!

NEW from Clemson! DARPA proudly presents:

ROBOTIC TENTICLES!

OCTOR Site
"Each Octarm is powered by compressed air and has surface pressure sensors, positional sensors and a camera mounted at its tip. This allows the limb to nimbly investigate pipes, tunnels and other narrow spaces."

"This ability, inherent in the OCTOR robots, gives OCTOR arms a huge advantage over conventional industrial robots."

They were developed through a project called OCTOR (sOft robotiC manipulaTORs), which involves several US universities and is funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
(What can I say, I like to know where my tax dollars are going. ^_^ )

What Can They Doo?

"Just like a real tentacle!" So I guess it does what all tentacles do when they go home from a hard days work?

It is not clear what military purposes the Octarms will be used for, but the limbs have also been attached to Talon robots, which are typically employed for reconnaissance and bomb disposal tasks.

Lets see it in Action!

Subdue the Elusive Pool Noodle!
"Attacking Prey" I can't even count the times I've needed an Octarm at the local pool. I mean, can YOU? ... I sure can't.

Homeland Security
"Infiltrating Bunkers" Now you too can rest assured at night, knowing that if Al-Qaeda steals your Ice Cold Coke ... we can just steal it back in the morning. Not to mention punishments worse then Guantanamo Bay. O_O;

Fetch!
"Going Places You wouldn't?" Tennis ball roll under the dresser? Too lazy to get up? Can Your SPOT do that. Hmmm?

Oh the textures!
"Gentle Grip" Variable grip, good for getting any type of job done. Pressure sensors, oh yeaah.

What are they Really Used For?

You might be wondering.. What are they going to do when they aren’t at your local pool, or protecting the National Coke Industry?

The possibilities, they're mind boggling!

At this point I believe its pretty clear.

Still perplexed?
This conversation ought to clear everything up:

Alice: I can almost feel it fastening around my ankle right now.
Bob: Ankle? You must read different comics than I do. -_-;;
Alice: ~Oh~
Alice: Don't tell Japan! Think of the children!
Bob: Oh believe me
Bob: They will... They will.

>_<

Japan and their Robots

"Only one has been attached to a robot at a time, but the researchers say several could work together in future." :/

Now, all DARPA has to do is attach 6 or 7 of em' to the BigDog and let it loose on the streets.
Yeah, that should entertain Japan for a while. Let them deploy their Mobile Suits!

All it needs is wings!

While the US has StickyBot (YouTube), RiSE (YouTube) and BigDog (YouTube)
(BigDog can take some punishment! Skip to the last 1/4 after the first kick to see a better one.)

Japan has Real Transformers (YouTube),
Neat Gundam vs The Mazinger Battles (YouTube) (Cosplaying 40yr-olds yelling at 11yr-olds!),
Entertaining Fights! (YouTube) (Nice grapple-throw about half way through too),
OmniZero pwned by Majingaa T_T (YouTube),
Ninja Robots Wielding Blades! (YouTube)
and Gracefull Fan Dancing Teams (YouTube).

I believe we know where each's priorities lie! ^_^

(And I'm surprised the OCTOR didn't originate in Japan. :p )

--
I'll probably be back to add something about NHK ni youkoso episode one, but its not all typed up yet.. and I'm hungry. I've still got to rip out and resize screenshots from the 1280 version to replace the 640 ones.

Dispute - Trusted Computing

Probably not the best way to introduce the concept but - neat video they've got there.

Check out the video at www.lafkon.net/tc by clicking the image above.

If you don't like QuickTime then try the Other Video Formats OR
(YouTube)(Google Video)

Anti-DRM? Anti-TC? (Don't mix em' up, but) You might enjoy this 'PSA'. It's interesting how humans will create such PSAs in order to influence minds.. and how easily people will follow them. (But, thats beside the point, look into these concepts and make your own 'educated' decisions.)

An interesting talk: Microsoft Research DRM talk it gets a bit ranty/lengthy at times, but its decent.

[Removed ranty discussion including VHS variable speed playback and other DVD copy-protection systems]

Is this something similar to the: Privacy vs security? Privacy vs Fredom? Well, there are defiantly advantages and disadvantages, but also some slippery slopes.

On another note: Just remember, Security through obscurity isn’t 'security'. (Though, it defiantly can mimic security pretty well sometimes.) Raarr proprietary, raarr.

future posts

so once i figure out how to copy mike's posting style, which is too cool for school, i'm going to make some more posts

here's what they're going to be about

1. gunslinger girl censoring
2. top 10 ds lite games
3. top 10 ds lite accessories
4. new anime season rundown

think you can put up a tutorial for the rest of us, mike?

also

i think it would be kinda cool if we started blogging what anime we're watching
about 4 screencaps (ctrl+i in windows media player) and reactions
but keep spoilers to a minimum

any thoughts, peoples?

re: Question - Only Randomness?

mike, it will be a sad, sad day when you stop blogging on wow. your posts are EXACTLY why i created wow. i wanted to make one blog where all of us could post our randomness and comment on it, whereas before it was a lot of constantly checking everyone elses' blogs - now there's a place where we can all post and share effortlessly. to be honest, your posts are more on topic than a lot of my recent posts... so don't worry about relevance.

you'll always have a home on wow

and if you ever decide to leave, keep coming back every now and then, and teach me how you make your posts look so awesome ;-)

btw, does anyone have any ideas on what changes i can make to the template to increase the cool factor?

Question - Only Randomness?

I wanted to ask all the World of Wabasco Members/Maintainers a question.

Should I only post 'Randomness' Entries and other 'entertaining' entries to 'World of Wabasco'?

For Example the last two posts:

Have not been completely the 'comedy' 'wow' 'entertainment' that every single person could enjoy (or be disgusted by) ^_^;

I could take the less Random entries over to a personal blog (which does not yet exist)

My hesitation is because at some point I plan to crank out an 'official blog', but I have yet to design the layout, and I am still in the process of completely planning out the various categories of content.

I can always create yet another blog, so if you wish I can take this type of content to a temporary/unorganized blog for the time being. (Which wouldn't require much effort.)

Let me know what you think. I don't want to indirectly change the 'style' and 'content' of 'World of Wabasco', or indirectly cause anyone to consider not posting their 'Randomness'/(or other content).

(I'm probably thinking too much, but I figured I would get the ball rolling ahead of time. Thanks.)
