News - Anime - Live Action, Matoko's 5cm, and Kintaro

Various Standard News of Interest

Speaking of Satoshi KON (ANN) (director of 'Paranoia Agent', 'Perfect Blue', 'Millennium Actress' and more), his newest project 'Paprika' (ANN) might make it to US Theaters March 2007.
The Paprika Trailer has some rather familiar Satoshi scenes...

(Paranoia Agent?)
(Perfect Blue?)

Some people say that the legacy of science fiction writer Philip K. Dick has revolutionized world cinema, far beyond Hollywood. Or is it, rather, the alternate realities of Japanese manga and anime, which have proved themselves an even more lasting tribute to imagination and futuristic politics? In any case, PAPRIKA is the definitive film of the Third Millennium about Counterfeit and Alternative Worlds. And it is gigantic fun, too. Please, fasten tight your seat-belts: it is a hell of a ride!

Live Action

Honey Clover Live Action (ANN)

Mushishi Live Action? Yeah, apparently.

Saikano Live Action - translation by weird_winghon is a bit flakey (often the grammar is off), but I'm glad to have had the chance to see it.
(Watched the trailer a couple times while waiting on it. :p )

Makoto Fanboy

Byousoku 5 Centimeter (site)
5 Centimeters per Second (ANN) (AniDB)

I've been waiting on this since the beginning of March (old link), but recently we can see some progress.

The 5cm Teaser can be found here 100k 500k 1.5M
And if you can handle it, Right-Click Save-As this 1280x720 version (Translated version out by The-Triad)

So far The-Triad plans to pickup the project.

The animation quality (gallery) seems like it will at the very least meet 'The Place Promised in Our Early Days' (ANN)

'Fanboy' is probably too harsh a word, but I've enjoyed several of Makoto's works (few at ANN) including his short films. Now I wouldn't go as far as to say something like 'Hoshi no koe' was great (it has its flaws). Or rather, that particular movie was in ways somewhat disappointing to me. The concepts he chooses are great, and the way he translates life to anime is very well done, but the arrangement of his 'plots', and at times the lack of 'meat on his characters' is the catch.
(The reason I use the term 'fanboy' is because I once caught myself being a bit too excited in the rush immediately after re-watching 'Other Worlds' (ANN) a few years later. ^_^; )

Fansubbing

Shinsen Just Released Night Head Genesis Ep 01

A-Et I love you! Yesterday they finished QC and The Last of Salaryman Kintaro (Anime) has been released! Get it NOW!
I've been eagerly awaiting this release if you couldn't tell. ^_^;

  • i will accept any Kon with open arms. if you want more scene comparisions... watch the gossip episode of PA. the chatty old ladies talking about lil' slugger (because i hate you all) are the exact same chatty old ladies from tokyo godfathers. even the background is the same (mmmm....same universe)

of all the kon i've seen, millenium actress has been my least favorite, but in retrospect, it wasn't that bad, and was the first Kon movie watched...so i'm going to give it another chance.

i still need to pick up "memories" so i can watch his 'magnetic rose' short...anyone watched it already?

    Honey Clover Live Action (ANN)

    Mushishi Live Action? Yeah, apparently.

    yeah....

the only live-action adaptation of anime i've enjoyed has been Casshern...it was thoroughly entertaining...especially when compared to the anime. (SWAN-ROBO!!)

the first thirty minutes of cutie honey live-action were the best thirty minutes in cinematic history....but the story was weak, the script was pathetic, the drama was bad, and the actors were horrible -- good for a campy comedy, not so much for a "serious" story. i really don't know why they tried. i guess it's the curse of Anno.

can't wait to see H&C live action, even though i expect it to be bad (Hagu is about 5'2"...versus ~4'8" in the manga, kinda ruins that childlike aspect of her.) i'm expecting them to keep the drama, but i don't think they'll be able to pull off the comedy. also wondering if they're just going to recap the entire series, or have a new story to follow (i'm crossing my fingers for more meat-senpai)

    mushishi...might be pretty good

at first, i thought you were talking about kashimashi...and i had some good ranting to do... but now....nothing. thanks a lot.

  • I've seen 'Memories' but I haven't gotten around to watching 'Millennium Actress' yet. As for 'Magnetic Rose', I thought it was ok. It kept me interested, but it wasn't too special. 'Stink Bomb' was fun at times, but it got old pretty fast. 'Cannon Fodder' was probably my favored short of the three.

I hadn't realized KON had done 'Magnetic Rose'.. so I kinda’ got carried away and looked a bit more into the 'Memories' staff...

Katsuhiro OTOMO director/creator of 'Akira' seemed to have a strong hand in 'Stink Bomb' and 'Cannon Fodder'.

'Akira'.. I never really enjoyed, mainly because I felt in the end that it let me down. I should probably read the manga before dismissing it, but the movie makes me shy away from spending the time to read it. (If it stayed about the biker gang then it would have been decent, but the extra stuff that never followed through wasn't good enough on its own, it was annoying.)

The character design for 'Cannon Fodder' was done by another guy that has worked on a couple other Studio 4C projects. (Most of which I enjoyed.)

Stink Bomb's director also directed the 'Wolf's Rain OVA' and did the storyboards for several 'Cowboy Bebop' episodes, as well as the 'Naruto' movies {shudder}. Also had a hand in some of 'Evangelion', 'Jin-Roh', and a few other more well known series. (Ha, 'Spriggan' Gun Designs take me back.)
Which might explain why it was enjoyable at times, but still went down hill.

    -----------

    OTOMO's black.. brush?
(No offense intended, a light joke.)

OTOMO also did 'Steamboy' which I actually enjoyed, yet it was quite predictable and just kept going for the 2 hours even though anything beneficial to the movie had already been covered. Reminded me of 'Stink Bomb' in that respect.

Others have told me they didn't enjoy 'Metropolis'. I personally don't remember much of it because I was tired when I watched it at a convention a few years ago. I'd have to watch it again to say anything about it because I only remember the end.

Again OTOMO, 'Spriggan' was fun at the time but weak in my opinion.

    ...

OTOMO is directing the 'Mushishi Live Action' so I'm a bit weary. I'm not sure if OTOMO is the reason I don't enjoy his projects, or if he just happens to get involved with those types of projects.

    -----------

If you want I can get you 'Memories' when we are both back on the T3. (Or by disk.) I'm not sure all of Memories is worth your time, but 'Magnetic Rose' is probably worth it to compare it to the other works by KON.

    -----------

Cutie Honey Live-Action, I saw the beginning one day when I stopped by thanks to you, but never the whole thing (I'm probably great full for that though >_< ).

The Casshan Live-Action bits that I saw were awesome, but I haven't tried to get a copy to finish it yet.

I hadn't made it clear, but I preferred the Saikano Anime over the Live-Action. So if anyone is planning on watching/finishing the series, I would suggest that over watching the live action. Some things where done better in animation. Also due to time constraints some events were left out of the LA, sometimes because of the 'WTF, why did the character do that' (not enough time to explain).

    -----------

About Kashimashi ^___^ ... I was all ready for it and then I watched the first episode... ran away, and never turned back! I know better then to mention something like that about an anime without watching wore then one episode, but sometimes it feels like there are other things worth my time and no time to invest in 'potential risks'. ^_^; Is that enough for a rant? >_<
